Jordan Fewell, SugarBakers Cakes

Growing up in the cake business—her mom is the boss—Jordan knew she'd end up somewhere in the family business. She is now head of sales and consultations at the Catonsville bakery. She is a graduate of Towson University and just bought a house with her fiancé Mike. (Wow, think about the cake they'll have at that wedding.)

What is the most popular flavor combination that couples choose for their wedding cake? Amaretto raspberry and red velvet fudge. Smith Island is a close second

Do you have many requests for Grooms cakes?  Yes! They are getting more and more popular

Any wedding disaster stories or close calls? We've had a few wholesale clients that have forgotten to order cakes, and we have come through at the last second. We keep a designer and manager on call to avoid disasters.

Are you able to ship any cakes? We have not yet perfected the shipping.

What was the most difficult request you received? We don't see it as difficult, but fun—trying new designs and thinking out of the box. These cakes are more than welcome!

How many wedding cakes do you produce on average? I would say an average of 30 a week.

What is something you would advise a newly engaged couple about choosing a bakery and/or cake?  You want to make sure they choose a professional bakery, and not just a family member or friend that makes cakes. You also want to make sure that it is worthy of serving all your guests and you need to make sure it tastes as beautiful as it looks.

Have you ever been invited to a wedding because they used SugarBakers for the cake? Yes! Several times actually. Sometimes you make friends.

Are cupcakes becoming more and more common at weddings? Which do you prefer? Cupcakes are more prevalent now as dessert. I kind of feel that you can do more design-wise with a cake, but the cupcakes are adorable too.

Have you had any celebrity requests? Sure, a few different NFL players and a golf pro, Tom Clancy, as well as many state officials. And we've done two Presidential Inagurations. —Nikki Reese (intern)
